Message: The National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) was established to treat and rehabilitate those wounded during the war of liberation with Pakistan. This demand for rehabilitation specialists led to the development of the first Physiotherapy course in Bangladesh in 1973. Overseas Physiotherapists and other medical professionals used to teach B Sc in Physiotherapy students and after two batches of successful completion of Bachelor degree the NITOR formed RIDH stopped enrolling B Sc in Physiotherapy under the faculty of medicine, Dhaka University. During 1973 and 1974 there was the creation of Bangladesh Physiotherapy Society (BPS) which is the oldest physiotherapy professional organization and still exists. In 1993 – 94 session the RIHD which is the only Government mother institute for Physiotherapy started enrolling B Sc in Physiotherapy for a 4 years professional graduation programme under the faculty of medicine, Dhaka University, and the course is still running. We are expecting to see that NITOR will start enrolling the postgraduate Physiotherapy students. The establishment of the Physiotherapy profession in Bangladesh was not easy and for some unseen reason several times this profession got bumped on its way moving forward. The Bangladeshi nation already realized the importance of Physiotherapy in the rehabilitation process. There was a demand from the Physiotherapy professionals for an individual Physiotherapy council but that demand is still not fulfilled yet. There was a demand for separate College of Physiotherapy from 2000 to the Government and the ministry of Health declared and allocated land for it. In reality this College of Physiotherapy project was stopped by a mysterious obstacle. Now we have thousands of qualified Physiotherapy professionals and we need Physiotherapy cadre jobs from PSC and the Government can take positive initiatives to create posts for the Physiotherapy professionals. Our organization is committed to work with the Government for the betterment of the Physiotherapists and willing to participate in any positive initiatives from the Government. Worldwide Physiotherapy profession moving forward and treating patients effectively. We have a lot to do and a lot to do research, and we are committed to improve and make our nation healthy.
